Balance between ecosystem services supply, consumption and surplus: the case of Miyun County, Beijing

  • Comprehensive assessment of ecosystem service supply and consumption, and quantitative analysis of relationship between them are of great significance to regional ecosystem services management and sustainable development decision making. We assessed the ecosystem services supply and consumption values in 1998 and 2013 for Miyun. We developed an evaluation system, analyzed main development driving forces of “eco-social-economy” system from multi-source data sources (remote sensing, statistics, research and others). The ecosystem services supply value was found to be much greater than consumption value, being mainly determined by location and functions of Miyun. From 1998 to 2013, the values of supply and consumption increased significantly .However, consumption growth was much greater than supply, determined by the rapid development of social economy. Miyun County and the Miyun Reservoir played key roles in drinking water supply, ecosystem protection for Beijing. They deserve adequate ecological compensations.
